When you complete this lesson, you will:
- Know five names of the Holy Spirit and their significance to you.
- Recognize the three sources of thoughts in our minds, the characteristics of each, how they can be recognized and what our response is to be to each kind of thought.
Before you begin…
This lesson continues to present truths that will help you discern whose voice is influencing your thoughts: satan’s or the Holy Spirit’s. This is so important because thoughts pondered and accepted give birth to our emotions, actions and habits. We must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ if we are going to walk in faith, hope, love, joy and victory! So before you begin listening or reading anything in this lesson, prepare your heart by quieting yourself in the Lord’s presence and seeking His revelation, illumination and grace to live in what He reveals.
Lord, I draw near with a sincere heart, repentant and washed by the blood of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I set aside my thoughts, my reasoning, my theology, my fears and my pride. I relax, cease my own strivings, and tune to your flow within. Holy Spirit, I open my heart and mind to you. I ask that You anoint the eyes of my heart and enlighten my understanding. I ask that You grant me God’s thoughts, God’s pictures, God’s emotions and God’s creativity. Thank you for what you reveal, in Jesus’ name, Amen. (Ps. 46:10; Ps. 62:5; Heb. 10:22; Eph. 1:17,18; Jer. 29:13; Isa. 1:18; Jn. 7:37-39; Acts 2:25)

Taking it deeper:
> Explore how the Lord expresses Himself in the following ways. Meditate on what the specific name of God means and find a Scriptural example or confirming reference. Then, using the four keys to hearing God’s voice, ask the Lord to reveal to you times when He has whispered to you in these ways. The more specifically you can pinpoint the times when you have heard His voice in the past, the more confident you will be about recognizing His voice in the future.
b) Spirit of Truth
> Read the testimony of Asaph in Psalm 73. Using journaling, ask the Lord to show you any time recently when you followed Asaph’s path into envy or depression. Then, still using journaling, come into the sanctuary to see the situation from God’s perspective. Worship!
> At least once each day for at least one week, read aloud the biblical truths given by Virkler to counter satanic lies. These may be found in the chart in the LEARN notebook on page 14 under the heading “Confess God’s Truth” or in the chart in the Counseled by God textbook on page 34 under “God’s Thoughts: Positive, Upbuilding.” Let faith grow in your heart as you hear these powerful declarations of truth from the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
> For at least the next week, make a concerted effort to be aware of the thoughts that are in your mind. Ask the Holy Spirit to remind to you to take note of what you are thinking. If possible, it would be helpful to keep track of how frequently you notice that you are pondering demonic negatives and how often you are meditating on godly positives. One internationally known Christian leader who took this course found to his amazement that 80% of his thinking was negative! How about you? Do you wonder why you feel depressed, angry, unmotivated, guilty, anxious, worried, suspicious? You could be allowing the enemy to sow seeds in your mind that are bringing a harvest of destruction in your life. Don’t let him get away with it for another day! Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ!
Prepare for the Quiz:
Don’t just draw on your own ability to remember what you’ve learned. Holy Spirit is your Teacher and He lives inside of you. Before you begin your quiz, pray from the heart:
Holy Spirit, I quiet myself before You, and I ask that You remind me of the things I have learned. You have promised to bring things to my remembrance. I ask You to do that now. Thank you!
