“I want to experience the words of Jesus as the Disciples did”

Let’s Transform the New Testament from Injunctions to a Story of Compassion and Release God's Healing Power

The New Testament is all about Jesus. He came to model how life is to be lived. So the Gospels are the heart of the Bible. Devour them. Make them your own. Soak in them until you are living them. In so doing, you will be returning to the Garden of Eden, where you walk and talk with God. Life is not about keeping laws which make God happy. It is about releasing the power of His indwelling Spirit with every breath we take.

“But I've read the New Testament more times than I can count!”
Then we've got a fun challenge for you! Discover how much you know about God's Word with CLU's free online Bible Quizzes. Put yourself to the test, and then share them with your friends. Now there's a friendly competition with purpose!

I was taught that I COULDN’T live the Gospels

At the point of my salvation, I had no idea that I could actually live as Jesus lived. I hungered to, but I was taught dispensationalism, which said miracles, deliverance, dreams, and the gifts of the Spirit were NOT for today. So with deep sorrow I accepted this teaching and moved on from the Gospels to the epistles, especially the second half of each. The latter half of Paul’s letters made the most sense to me.

What I understood was that Jesus' shed blood washed away my sins so I could go to heaven. That was the  purpose of my salvation. Of course, Jesus did MUCH MORE than that when He died at Calvary, but I was never taught the rest of what He purchased for me. So to me, the first part of Paul’s epistles was just confusing theology. It was about being in Christ and having Christ in me, whatever all that meant. It was a nice idea, but with no practical significance that I could see.

I ended up gravitating to the second half of Paul’s letters, where Paul gave commands about how I should live. I could sink my teeth into these commands and set my will to obey them (otherwise known as will-worship or false religion).

The result was that I experienced accusation, condemnation and depression.

I discovered it is impossible to keep the law (Gal. 2:16; Rom. 10:4), and the end result of trying to live by laws is guilt, condemnation and death (Rom. 7:23). Yuck! I am obviously doing something wrong, because Romans 8:1 tells me There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.”

Well, I assume I am in Christ Jesus. I did embrace Him as my Savior. Isn’t that “in Christ"?

Enter — the Holy Spirit

Have you noticed the climax at the end of Peter's Pentecost sermon didn’t even mention that they would go to heaven if they repented and were baptized? Instead he said, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Act 2:38).

What’s the big deal about the Holy Spirit? He sure wasn’t mentioned to me when I was led in “the sinner’s prayer.” All the Holy Spirit was to me was a theological part of the Trinity. I knew essentially nothing about the Holy Spirit, and sure did not have any kind of relationship with Him. And that is exactly why being “in Christ,” and having Christ “in me” were meaningless phrases to me. These were the sections I skipped over when I read the New Testament, as I went for the meat – the LAWS which I would try to keep.

OK folks, in case you haven’t guessed it by now, this is a completely
messed up and wrong way to read the New Testament.

The New Testament was stolen from me by satan!

So obviously I have read the New Testament wrong! The Gospels were removed, because I was told that I could not live as Jesus lived. The book of Acts was transitory, being for the early Church, and no longer relevant to Church life. The first part of Paul’s epistles consisted of meaningless phrases. The book of Revelation was for the future.

(I did not know that the book of Revelation could legitimately be interpreted as having occurred mostly in the past. This would mean I no longer needed to project into the future a belief that the antichrist would take over the world, which is enough to depress anyone – even those who are supposed to be the light of the world and shine brightly in their communities as they disciple all nations.)

Satan had stolen most of the New Testament from me! I spent 15 years fighting to get it back, and I now believe I can live not only the New Testament but the entire Bible as well. I have my Bible back, after years of warring to restore it!

Fight and take back your Bible. Do not let satan steal it from you! TAKE IT BACK!

Now let me ask you, “How valuable is it to get your Bible back?”

Re-reading the New Testament — seeing that it is all about living life by the Spirit (Gal. 5:18, 22-25)

I now read the New Testament aware that Jesus ministered by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). This is the same Holy Spirit Who enables me to minister as Jesus did (Acts 1:8; Gal. 3:5; Col. 1:29; Jas. 5:17). I am excited about the revelation that the Spirit of God lives within me, empowering me, transforming me and granting me God’s thoughts and God’s wisdom (1 Cor. 12:7-11).

I can do all the works of healing and deliverance that Jesus did. He even said we could do greater works than He did (Jn. 14:12).

Isn’t it time for you to re-read the New Testament looking for the role of the Holy Spirit in your life?

How about reading the New Testament with fresh eyes and a heart open to believe ALL that God has promised to you. Set aside all of man’s doctrines, and simply read and believe what it says and step into supernatural Christianity. I have! It is FUN! And if you do it with Dr. Andrew Hardy at your side, you will be receiving insights from a man who believes in miracles and divine healing, and who practices these things himself. Now won’t that be refreshing? Come on, let’s go!

Satan, be gone. Doctrines of demons, be gone (1 Tim. 4:1). I mean, whose interests are best served by the belief that the Church is powerless to heal or deliver, and that Christians can’t have demons and that the antichrist is the powerful one?

How about if you come to the New Testament with an open, childlike, believing heart, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth (Eph. 1:17,18).

What you discover through illumination of the Holy Spirit yourself provides, by far, the richest learning experience available!

Journaling, revelation and memorization happen weekly…

You will find one or two verses leap off the pages of the assigned chapters of Scripture reading each week. You are asked to memorize these verses as they are God speaking directly to you. By hiding these words in your heart, the Holy Spirit can bring these Scriptures to remembrance in time of need (Jn. 14:26).

We also ask you to journal and record what God is speaking to you from the chapters you are reading.

So now the New Testament is no longer just historical information. It is life-changing revelation straight from the heart of Almighty God!

Lives Transformed as People Take This Journey Through the Bible

Stephen D. Gunnaway Hears God Through Scripture

The most exhilarating result [of taking these courses] has been learning to read Scripture using vision. Before, I would ‘study’ the Word, searching for the meaning of a passage or read a commentary to find the principle being taught. Now I read Scripture with my journal open and ready to receive whatever God has to say because I now understand that God wants to speak specifically to me about the things He wants for my life - not some dry theological platitude.

Using vision to read God’s Word is relaxing because you learn to anticipate hearing Him speak into your heart. Imagining pictures of the events in your mind as you read provokes the vision which I find especially true for the Old Testament. You learn to read slowly, without deadlines or goals because now you are receiving information straight from the Heart of the Father and you bask in His presence as you read. The Scripture truly becomes a living Book as found in the following example.

Journal Entry: May 28, 2010 / Exodus 17:8-13
Lord, I see Your power flowing through the rod in Moses’ hand. May I accept You as the “rod” of my life in all circumstances.

I love to see you learning this way. It gives Me pleasure. Keep on trusting for I have plans for you. Do not turn to the right or the left, but see Me ahead of you. You are special to Me and My Father loves you as I stand before Him interceding for you.

May God bless the work of Christian Leadership University as they free other Christians from the shackles of religion while teaching them that God just wants to be their Friend.

Happy Reflections

by Jack Evans

Harry And Joe (OJoseph) Met Near the Zoo... HHad Zebra Mania.”

When you read those words, you just might wonder if you’re still on the right website!  Actually, these words form an acronym to remember the Minor Prophets (Hosea, Amos, Joel, etc).  They’re written on a note along with many others taped to the wall over my desk.

I just completed the courses for CLU’s Doctor of Biblical Studies.  For the past 2½ years, I’ve been taping notes like this to the wall for quick reference, and I now have quite a collection.  For instance, there are scriptural quotes I just never want to forget, like: “You drew near when I called upon You; You said, ‘Do not fear.’” (Lamentation 3:57), written at perhaps the lowest point of history for God’s people, yet full of hope even as Jeremiah walked through the smoldering ruins of Jerusalem.

And then there’s Dr. Virkler’s excellent article on Mark 11:22, clear, informative, uplifting; that’s a keeper.  Another powerful quotation which seems to apply particularly to our world today is from Isaiah 5:20, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness”.  Come to think of it, these words probably have applied to every age in history.

I found that studying Scripture at CLU, while hard work academically, was spiritually rewarding.  We all know about the Lamad method (revelation-based learning); I read all about it when I was beginning my studies.  But experiencing its effect is something quite different – it’s essentially a matter of the heart and the soul.  I found the Lamad approach was marvelously ‘stealthy’ in creating a personal transformation in me.  It’s subtle and gradual, but also continuous and efficient.  I can testify to its positive effect in my own life and am grateful for it.

My entire experience in these studies was a happy one. My Instructor and Director, Dr Karen King, helped me every step of the way.  The staff at CLU could not have been any more helpful or pleasant, including Charity who patiently put up with my mountain of emails. And, imagine, an institution  where you can call up and often speak to the actual University President (Mark Virkler) or to your Department Head (Patti Virkler).  While the courses could be demanding, I felt I had lots of friendly support.

Most of all, I found the greatest benefit of my CLU studies was a more intimate immersion in God’s Word.  As many of you have probably already felt,  God’s words and teachings to His people throughout Scripture are personal letters from Him to each of us and a daily source of strength: “In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following” (1 Timothy 4:6).

You know, 2½ years ago I thought I was getting old and was ready for the scrap heap.  But now, I’m convinced I’m getting younger.  Studying and meditating on God’s Word will do that for a person.

“O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord, Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation”.  (Psalm 95:1)

Seeing, Hearing and Feeling

by Nora Flavin

Seven of us will continue in our final semesters in Through the Bible.

How freeing and powerful to read through the Bible seeing Jesus and hearing and feeling by the Holy Spirit!!!!

How much time should we invest in receiving revelation from Scripture?

O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever mine. I have more insight than all my teachers for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged because I have observed Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way that I may keep Your word. I have not turned aside from Your ordinances, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Ps. 119:97-105).

As we pray over Scriptures, allowing the Lord to speak to us personally, we experience God ministering prophetically to us, as verses leap off the pages directly into our hearts. The following verses describe this experience:

"So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts" (2 Pet. 1:19).

"Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was opening the Scriptures to us?" (Lk. 24:32)

I guarantee you will learn a lot, as well as be reminded of things you know and once again need to put into practice. The Holy Spirit always reveals new, relevant insights every time you prayerfully approach His Word with an open, hungry, teachable heart.

I encourage you to take three months to a year and explore the Bible in-depth. Can you think of anything that would be better?
